Presidential Approval Polls
Methodology
*We aggregate results from A+ to B- rated pollsters only per Race to the White House's pollster ratings. In our recent polls average, each pollster is given equal weight. When there are multiple polls from the same pollster, the findings are averaged. This "flat average" is based solely on polls from the last 60 days. For any given period in the flat average, if there are not three polls, or multiple polls from only one or two pollsters, the measure takes on its time-weighted average (see below).
†In our time-weighted average, each poll gets a weight based on how recent it is. Specifically, the weight for each poll decreases over time using the formula:
Here, di is the number of days since the poll concluded. After calculating these weights, each poll's result is adjusted by multiplying it by its weight. We then add up these adjusted results and divide by the total weight to get the final average for each variable:
If a single pollster has conducted multiple polls, we first apply this method to calculate a weighted average for that pollster's results. The date used for this aggregated poll is the most recent of that pollster's surveys. Then, this averaged result is treated like any other poll in the overall methodology, using the same approach to calculate the final weighted average.
